About W. H. Short

William Harry Short

As a writer and author, I have just begun. I graduated from High School during the Vietnam War and enlisted in the Navy immediately upon graduation. I was trained initially as a Hospital Corpsman, but then I trained and qualified to be a deep sea dive then a saturation diver. My medical specialty was diving medicine. For the next 13 years I worked as an independent duty corpsman and saturation diver. Then an opportunity came, and I changed my rate which allowed me to become a master diver.

After completing 20 years I retired as a Master Chief and a Saturation Master Diver – my rank was E-9 BMCM(MDV)(SS).  While in the Navy I managed to complete college - B.S. and an M.S.  I taught school for a year in Los Angles after retiring from the Navy.  Then worked for a major corporation (SAIC) for over 20 years.  Then finally went back to education and taught diving and hyperbaric medicine at the College of Oceaneering which became part of National University.  Where I also served as the Academic Dean.

I started writing in the Navy, mostly by accident - when no one else would. That led to more and more involved publications such as ships’ information books, engineering specifications, technical manuals, diving safety manuals, and then little stories about the Navy.  I also have written various educational support documents, such as: curriculums, lesson plans, study guides, self-studies, etc. When I was at the university I published a non-fiction Diving Dictionary for my students, which is even today still selling.

Now I write novels full time. I have published eight fiction novels and one non-fiction book. I have another six manuscripts that are finished and will be published once final editing is complete. I have eight partial projects in the works. Thus far I have never suffered from writers block and I have a list of at least twenty-five undeveloped ideas for future novel projects.

I always have been partial to fiction and I decided that my final career would be as a writer and author. Now I had the time and opportunity to write what I wanted. My first published novel ‘Two Weeks’ is a Suspense and Romance. But then I wrote a historical fiction novel of the old west just after the Mexican-American War. ‘Apache Kid’ was another western historical fiction set just after the civil war. The next two efforts were Suspense / Mystery’s “Terror and Murder” and ‘The Nanny’. I really enjoyed writing these novels.

I also enjoy good science fiction, not horror or fantasy; but futuristic themes such as space travel. This led me to write a trilogy – Keep the Union Safe, Keep the Faith Pure, and Keep the Peace. These novels cover a solar system war beginning in 2227. All are long novels in the 400 to 500 pages in length. Only the first one is published. In these novels I was able to use my military experience. Anyone who writes Science Fiction must dabble with time – thus came the story ‘Web of Time’, about a man thrown back in time 500 years and his struggles.  My newest novels are Doc and Pig Boat.  Doc is a historical fiction set in the old west,  where you will learn about medicine and mining in 1870s.  Pig Boat is about deep sea diving and submarines just before WWII.

I use life experiences with which to blend into a story.  The Navy, Industry, and various educational institutions where I have worked has given me a treasure trove of little stories and experiences. I have been a deep-sea diver, truck driver, cook, submariner, combat veteran, teacher, health care professional, merchant seaman, ships mate, engineehusband, father, and grandfather. I have traveled extensively around the world and have been on every continent except Antarctica.

Currently living in Fort Pierce, Florida with my wife Lorraine of over 49 years. We have 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren.
