Doctor Ben Kelly is fresh out of medical school and has traveled from his comfortable life in the east to Tucson in the territory of Arizona. He is searching for his grandfather as a favor to his mother. He’s not looking to settle down in the west or even practice medicine. He finds the rough and tumble lifestyles of the cattlemen and miners to be something he has never experienced. He gradually gets drawn into a series of events that begin to shape his life and character.
This book takes the reader back to a time when most Americans live a rural life. Indoor plumbing was rare, night light was by kerosene lamps, serious disease was common, work in mining or on a ranch was hard and accidents happen often. These are the challenges facing a doctor in the old west. Combine that with Apache threats, stage robbers, and the other challenges of life and you have the story of Doc.
