Pig Boat

Historical Fiction - A story about Deep Sea Diving and Submarines

In the late 1930s both the United States and Japan predicted the coming war The U. S. was woefully unprepared for what was coming and concentrated on breaking the Japanese codes.

This story is about of a top secret effort by the United States to break the codes. To achieve this the Navy has to use their new helium-oxygen diving capability that has just been developed. This story is about the divers on an old S boat submarine who are trying to recover the Japanese coding and decoding equipment from a sunken Japanese ship.

In the mist of this effort an American submarine Squalus sinks and survivors must be saved and the submarine must be raised. These Navy divers and submariners attempt to achieve the impossible – to work in freezing cold waters, in heavy currents, dive deeper, and work underwater longer than has ever been done. They do this in absolute secrecy. The S Boat submarines were built for World War 1 and are far removed from the technological wonders of the new fleet boats – they are the true Pig Boats.
